What do we do?

Nijihiro is the official LGBTQA circle for University of Tsukuba, composed of both sexual minority and straight students. LGBTQA is the acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning sexual minorities added by an A for Ally, representing straight students who are supportive.

Our circle aims on promoting a better university where everyone is able to live comfortably, what we pursue through discussing problems related to sexual minorities, making events in campus, spreading information and also working on actual issues in the university environment.

Our activities are mainly held in Japanese, but we have international students and Japanese who can speak English as members, too. If you are interested in LGBTQA activism or would like to get to know friendly people, give it a try and come to one of our meetings.

Want to know more?

Nijihiro has its origins on the first semester of 2013, when several volunteers gathered to organize a T-ACT project called Sexual Minorities and School Education (ID 13068A), which was held in December that year and achieved an attendance of more than 60 people, among students majoring in education, people interested in LGBT matters, university staff and several others. This project was awarded with a special prize on T-ACT's 2013 second semester awards.

After this successful experience, the volunteers who took part on the project decided to create an university circle, to be named Tsukuba University LGBTQA Circle Nijihiro and which got officially recognized by May of 2014, already including new members together with the T-ACT ones.
Our present activities also include discussing LGBT-related topics, watching movies, study sessions and more. We also work on promoting events inside the university, such as lectures on sexuality and gender identity, booths at the university festival and events on more specific topics, such as the above mentioned Sexual Minorities and School Education and also Sexual Minorities and Health Care, held in 2014. A detailed list (in Japanese) of our activities so far can be found at the History page. Nijihiro members have also written a column for the local newspaper "Joyo Shimbun" during the second half of 2015.
So far most of our activities have been held in Japanese, but we do plan on increasing our number of English materials and on having better support for non-Japanese speakers. Don't hesitate on contacting us. ;)
